Additionally, you may explain your need for external funding on the application as AIESEP may have funding for small stipends for a limited amount of PhD students.

What will it look like?

The summer school offers a unique opportunity for personal and professional development in the areas of physical education and sport pedagogy. It focuses on the development of key competencies required for successful academic writing, defense of the doctoral dissertation and identifying further research directions in the field. The AIESEP summer school provides an opportunity for intellectually curious PhD students to explore new knowledge, to expend cultural awareness, and to exchange experiences with students and faculty.

Phase I Pre-PlanningEach admitted PhD student will submit a manuscript about their dissertation plan if they are ready at that stage (approximately 5,000 words). If admitted PhD students are not in the stage of writing a dissertation plan, they might submit a writing sample of approximately 5,000 words. Each PhD student will be paired up with a mentor who will provide detailed feedback on the PhD student’s writing, ideas, and research methods.

Phase II Presentations and Mentorship: Once PhD Students arrive in Jyväskylä they will meet one-on-one with the mentoring faculty for writing feedback and present a 3min thesis presentation to the faculty and other PhD students during the summer school. Each participant will answer questions for 10minutes. This is meant to be a supportive environment where PhD students learn to effectively communicate their research and practice academic dialogue (similar to conference presentations).

Phase III Expert Sessions: A selected group of professors aligned with AIESEP have been recruited to host half-day sessions across three days, which will consist of the bulk of the PhD Summer School. During May 18th, 19th, and 20th, 2024. PhD students will attend a morning and afternoon session which will last approximately 2-3hrs each. Each night there will be an organized dinner where students and faculty get to socialize.
