Workshop Dr. Femke van Nassau: Basics of Implementation Science

Wednesday June 22nd 14.00-17.00 & Thursday June 23rd 10.00-12.30

Successful implementation and implementation science are becoming increasingly important to a growing group of academics and professionals. After all, health benefits from interventions and other innovations can only be realized if they are implemented properly.

Therefore dr. Femke van Nassau will give you an introduction to the world of implementation science. Femke will explain what implementation science is, how it works, and why it's crucial to think about implementation from the beginning. She will discuss the position of stakeholders, their issues, and how to overcome those obstacles, and how to evaluate implementation. She will share relevant models and theories in implementation science as well as state-of-the-art articles and tools. Femke will draw on her experience conducting implementation studies to address questions such as what is required to make an evidence-based program implementable, how to conduct a process evaluation and provide examples with a focus on sustainable implementation. There is plenty of room for questions and discussion.

During the workshop you will be actively participating as well, applying the knowledge Femke has shared. Think of an implementation case that you would like to work on during this workshop. This could be an implementation problem you are facing, a new intervention that needs to be implemented, evaluation of implementation processes, or any other issue you think is related to implementation. You can think about large scale implementation, or just introducing an innovation in a small team only. We can use your example during the workshop, providing you the ability to receive practical guidance at the end of the workshop. If you have no particular case to work on, that is fine too. We will split into groups and you can join any case of your interest.

About Femke

Femke van Nassau (PhD) is senior researcher at the Department of Public and Occupational Health and Amsterdam Public Health Research Institute at the Amsterdam UMC, location VUmc in the Netherlands.
Her PhD focused on the nationwide scale up of the school-based obesity prevention program DOiT. That is where her strong interest in Implementation Science started. Since then she has made it her mission to narrow the gap between science, practice and policy. Her main research topics are: linking implementation strategies to facilitators and barriers, developing evidence-based implementation plans, designing and conducting process evaluations and measurement of implementation processes. In her current role, Femke is involved in several health promotion projects in different settings, such as in the neighbourhood, the workplace, football clubs and in the hospital. She co-founded the ‘Implementation, Translation, Scale-up and Sustainability’ special interest group of the ISBNPA society, co-initiated the Netherlands Implementation Collaborative, and is organiser of the annual Dutch and European Implementation Science conference.
