The Role of Implementation Science in Physical Activity Promotion Through Clinic-Community Linkages
Convenor: Prof. Mark Stoutenberg, PhD, MSPH
Associate Professor and Leading Expert in Exercise is Medicine and Implementation Science
Date & Time: November 10, 2025, 14:00–17:00
Venue: Universidade Lusófona, Lisbon
Registration deadline: November 02, 2025
Workshop Description: This hands-on workshop explores how principles of implementation science can be applied to strengthen the connection between healthcare settings and community-based physical activity programs. Led by Prof. Mark Stoutenberg—an internationally recognized leader in the Exercise is Medicine initiative—the session will provide practical frameworks and real-world examples for integrating physical activity promotion into clinical practice through sustainable partnerships with fitness centers, sports organizations, and community health programs.
Participants will gain skills to identify barriers and facilitators to collaboration between clinics and community stakeholders, develop actionable implementation plans, and adapt evidence-based strategies to local contexts. Using interactive group work, case studies, and applied exercises, attendees will learn how to:
- Engage healthcare providers, administrators, and community partners in promoting physical activity as a standard part of care.
- Design clinic-to-community referral systems that enhance patient adherence to physical activity prescriptions.
- Apply implementation frameworks (e.g., RE-AIM, CFIR) to support effective and sustainable program rollout.
- Evaluate outcomes and process indicators to improve long-term integration of exercise promotion in healthcare pathways.
This workshop is tailored for researchers, clinicians, public health professionals, and community program leaders committed to translating physical activity science into real-world health impact.
Format: Interactive, applied session with short lectures, group discussions, and practice-based exercises.
Duration: 3 hours
Expected Outcomes: Participants will leave with a draft implementation plan for a clinic-community linkage model and a clearer understanding of how to embed physical activity promotion within health systems using evidence-informed implementation strategies.
