Abstract
PRUF project is designed to support a multidisciplinary research program aimed at identifying the predictive markers, the molecular targets and the economical/behavioral aspects of European families in both rural and urban areas. The final aim is to address the preventive or therapeutical (pharmacological and non) efforts to prevent obesity and its progression to obesity-related complications.
The multidisciplinary approach of the project will be accomplished via integration of multiple competencies (biological, medical, psychological, social sciences, economics, electronic engineering and data science). Families from 11 centers in 10 EU countries will be sampled and data related to biological, behavioral and socio-economic determinants of obesity will be collected. All data will be analyzed through a multi-level network analysis of family variables that will identify the predominant obesity drivers, both across generations and dimensions. The multi-level network results will be the basis for the creation of a web-based decision support tool.
Every citizen and family member can consult this information tool to be aware of obesity issues, diet choices, and lifestyle suggestions. We will also produce policy recommendations (cogenerated with relevant stakeholders) that may serve as a decision support system for policymakers in order to prevent obesity in families. The main expected outcomes are: i) creation of new knowledge on how residential environment affects lifestyle decisions and diets and on regional variation in obesity prevalence by metropolitan residence status; ii) introduction of a new interdisciplinary research network to analyze and seek solutions to obesity as a chronic disease; iv) increased knowledge on how family lifestyle evolves over time and on how family lifestyle dynamics influence childhood obesity; v) production of recommendations on prevention and therapeutic strategies in rural and urban communities to prevent childhood obesity.
